Peculiarities of Territorial Distribution of Soviet Toponyms: Georgia

Author: Dali Nikolaishvili
Keywords: Toponyms, Georgia, Soviet period
Annotation:

In the near past, known as the Soviet epoch, more than one Georgian toponym had their names changed and replaced by so called “Red” toponyms. Consequently, many old Georgian geographical names were forgotten. Although some of them have been revived since the 1990s, but many areas in the Georgian map still survive with their old Soviet names. The goal of the study is to identify the scales of the Soviet toponymy in Georgia and some of the geographical peculiarities of their territorial distribution. The following problems were solved by using GIS-technologies and geographical analysis:  A list of Soviet toponyms by considering the circumstances and dates of their naming was drafted.  The scales of “Sovietization” in different regions of Georgia were identified and some peculiarities of their territorial distribution were identified as well.  The periodization of introducing Soviet toponyms was done.  A map of Soviet Georgian toponyms was compiled.
