Magnetic properties of materials - diamagnetism and paramagnetism
Author: Tornike TchabukianiKeywords: magnetism, diamagnetism, paramagnetism, material
Annotation:
It is known that all materials in nature are magnetically active. This means that when exposed to a magnetic field, a non-zero total magnetization is produced. In this seminar we consider diamagnetic and paramagnetic materials. In diamagnetic materials the magnetization vector is aligned antiparallel to applied magnetic field and susceptibility is negative. In paramagnetic materials the magnetization vector is parallel to applied magnetic field and susceptibility is positive. Without applied magnetic field the total magnetization of both diamagnetic and paramagnetic materials is zero and magnetization increases linearly with magnetic field. Magnetic properties of these materials will be discussed from classical and quantum mechanical points of view. One experimental method for measuring magnetization by using vibration sample magnetometer will be also presented
